Pastor Becky Wingo Bowling is our Pastor here at Bethel UMC. She is married to Clifford Bowling and has two adult children, Aaron and Jacky, with her first husband, Reverend Greg Wingo, who passed away in 2015. Becky was raised in southern Ohio near Portsmouth. She "knew" at a very young age, while living in Dayton, where she was born, that God had a specific work for her to do. Still, it wasn't until she was 40 years old that Becky understood her calling. She decided not to pursue candidacy for ordination as she felt her call was to pastor the very small church. She completed her educational requirements while serving churches across Kentucky. Upon her husband's death, she decided to return home to be near her parents. After her marriage to Clifford Wade Bowling, they moved to his hometown of Troy, serving under appointments which finally led to Bethel and Casstown United Methodist Churches. Pastor Becky teaches the Word in a way that helps listeners learn the history of the scripture while connecting it to the world we live in today. Pastor Becky is a loving individual who cares deeply for those who enter the doors of our church and those who do not know Christ.
Our Story

Our Story started over 170 years ago, in November of 1853 when the Beech Bethel Methodist Episcopal Church was organized with 20 members. The first service was held in a log church located on a plot of land donated by Aaron Houser at 2505 E. Loy Rd. Thirteen years after the start of the church, the first Sabbath school was held. In 1893, the old log church was moved a short distance west and a new building was erected, which we currently worship in. It’s also interesting to note, in 1907, a 20 year-old Houser descendant fell ill and requested that upon his death, $50 would be given to the church. Subsequently, the bell was purchased with this gift and is still in use today. In 1917, the church building was raised and a social room was built under the entire structure. Men and boys of the church, as well as neighbors and friends in the community did the digging with pick and shovel. In June of the following year, a special patriotic program was held where all gathered in front of the church for a group picture. There were 187 people in that picture, which still hangs in the church today. Skip ahead over 40 years later, in 1959, the decision was made and work began to construct an addition which would include 4 classrooms, restrooms and furnace room. For the next 60 plus years, the church building has received maintenance and upgrades, but for the most part remains the structure that our forefathers built decades ago.
The church family at Bethel truly appreciates the charm and the historical story of this little country church nestled in the cornfields of Miami County. However, the church is so much more than the building. It is the feeling of those who sit in these pews, that they are a family who come together to care and support each other. The reason their love is so strong in this building is because it is first and foremost filled with the love of God. As they have served the community for over 170 years, the people in this church have spread much love throughout the area. Yet when they gather today, they know that what is most important is they gather to worship God and to grow spiritually in their Christian love.
God, who is one, is revealed in three distinct persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
We believe in salvation through Jesus Christ. God became human in Jesus, whose life, death, and resurrection demonstrate God's redeeming love.
The Holy Spirit is God's present activity in our midst. When we sense God's leading, God's challenge, or God's support and comfort, it is the Holy Spirit at work.
We believe that the Bible is the primary authority for our faith and practice.
The church is the body of Christ, an extension of Christ's life and ministry in the world today.
Bethel UMC is part of a church charge, Bethel-Casstown Charge.
A church charge is when two or more congregations are under the spiritual leadership of one minister. This pastor is responsible for providing pastoral care to each congregation. In our case, Pastor Becky leads the service at Bethel UMC at 9:00am on Sunday mornings and then drives to Casstown UMC to lead their service each Sunday at 10:45am. The blessing we have with this scenario is that we have our own “church family” here at Bethel as well as an extension of that family at Casstown. We enjoy occasionally celebrating special events together as well as the Fifth Sunday of the month services. There are typically 4 or 5 of these a year and on those Sundays, we worship together, alternating between Bethel Church and Casstown Church.
